The History Of Schumacher

Otto Woodward and Albert Schumacher left their jobs at Lear to found Woodward-Schumacher Electric Corp in 1947, originally occupying a 5,000 square foot loft in Chicago, Illinois. Its focus was manufacturing coils, small chokes, and output transformers.

Otto Woodward passed away and Albert Schumacher took control of the fledgling company.

The year 1959 was a significant year for Woodward-Schumacher. It released the 1959 Supermite 4A 6V/12V Battery Charger and began its journey as the preeminent American manufacturer of automotive battery chargers.
In the same year, Woodward-Schumacher not only formed Apex Coil, Transformer and Solenoid Manufacturing in Quincy, Illinois, but purchased the Acme Corporation, a manufacturer of ballasts for the lighting industry.

Schumacher began supplying power transformers for Fender amplifiers. According to Fender, “Schumacher is : the heart and soul component of our amps.”

Woodward-Schumacher became the Schumacher Electric Corporation.

Drag-racing legend Don Schumacher retired from racing and joined the family business, Schumacher Electric Corporation. In an interview with Inc. Don said, “Making transformers involved more engineering than | liked at the time. Since | loved cars, | wanted to do something automotive-related, so | focused on building the battery charger business.”

Schumacher Electric co-founder Albert Schumacher passed away at the age of 81.
Don Schumacher returned to racing as the owner of Don Schumacher Racing.

Schumacher Electric launched the DSR ProSeries line of professional-grade battery chargers, jump starters, diagnostic tools, and maintainers. The line was named for Schumacher CEO Don Schumacher’s racing team.

Schumacher’s corporate headquarters relocated to Fort Worth, Texas from Mount Pleasant, Illinois, establishing a 30,000 square foot office and 300,000 square foot distribution facility.
